7 Books That Has Helped Shape My Mindset

When I finish reading a book, I feel as if I’ve just accomplished something major. I invested in my knowledge and became wiser so that’s major for me!! I am a big reader always have been and nowadays, it’s so much easier for me to finish a book because I have an Audible subscription via Amazon. I tend to listen while I’m working out, driving in my car, while I’m cooking breakfast or just doing everyday things around the house. I am always listening to something that will help me to grow in life and business. However, with social media being one of the main places where we receive our information, I am proud to say that I am old school and still love to read a good book (pen and highlighter please). Although I do have an audible account, some of the books listed below I’ve purchased the physical copy just to add to my home library. Here are some really great books that I’ve completed in the past few months.

Below you’ll find a few different genres. I am usually listening to and/or reading more than one book at a time. To purchase just click on the title or the image and add them to your book collection!

Becoming by Michelle Obama

This was my inflight read. I started this book during my birthday trip to Bali and just finished it during my last trip to L.A. This was a really great book. I loved learning about what it took to become Michelle Obama she spoke about her earlier childhood, her family and the years spent at Princeton and Harvard. She also gave the inside scoop on how it was growing up on the Southside of Chicago and how in many ways how she and Barack are just like us, everyday hard working Americans. She spoke about their marriage, IVF, marriage counseling and sooooo much more. This is definitely a book you should invest in reading.

Everyday Millionaires by Chris Hogan

I finished this book so quickly because it was just that good! It’s more of an interview style where the author speaks with different millionaires and he tells their stories. 79% of Everyday Millionaires became millionaires by investing in their companies retirement plan. I plan to listen to this book again within the next few months. I see it as being a book I’ll always go back to just to brush up on my knowledge and prepare myself to become an Everyday Millionaire.

Blend by Mashonda Tifrere

Mashonda hit the nail on the head with this book!! It was an excellent read from beginning to end. She gave tips on how she healed herself from her past relationship with Swizz Beats, she spoke about their very first child they had together who passed away, about her and Alicia Key’s relationship and how they were able to get to the point of being a blended family and so much more. I really enjoyed this book because of her transparency. She didn’t hold anything back which made the book even more interesting. It’s not a tell-all, it’s a self-help and she gives details that would have you wanting more with each page.

The Coming by Daniel Black

This book woke me up!!! The coming is basically about how we as African Americans were stolen from our homeland and the horrific events that happened on the boat while coming to America. The author gave explicit details about how life was in our homeland, how the “pale men” came in and stole us, what happened on the boat coming here and so much more. I took a great interest in this book because, how would you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you come from. Honestly, this book and other books like it inspires me to work harder. I owe it to my ancestors to be the best that I can be!!

Influencer by Brittany Hennessy

This is a great book if you’re interested in growing your following on Instagram/ social media. The author gives great tips from influencers and details on how they’ve managed to grow their followings. I finished this book a few months ago and I see myself reading it again.

Black Privilege by Charlamagne Tha God

Charlamagne Tha God speaks about his journey from a small town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina to now being a cohost of Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club. He spoke about in great detail how he turned his troubled early life around by owning his mistakes. What I loved most about this was the fact that he not only owned his mistakes but he also spoke about how his controversial opinions got him fired from several on-air jobs. Fast Forward to now and his bold advice and confidence is what he’s known for on The Breakfast Club. I love how he has the confidence to live his own truth.

The 10 top distinctions between Millionaire and Middle Class by Keith Cameron Smith

The author tells you how to think like a millionaire and reap the benefits of a millionaire mindset. He gives 10 key principles to moving beyond the middle class and up the economic ladder. One of them is millionaires think long-term and the middle class thinks short-term. He teaches about how to create a clear vision of the life you desire and to focus on it. This was a very inspirational and practical guide filled with savvy and sensible advice. I will be sure to read it again before the year is over to brush on everything that I learned and to ensure I am putting the knowledge to use.

Top 4 Investment Books For Beginners

The Simple Path To Wealth: Your Road Map To Financial Independence and a Rich, Free Life [by JL Collins]

The Simple Path To Wealth is an amazing resource for people of all ages.

The book grew out of a series of letters to her daughter concerning various things – mostly about money and investing things she was not yet quite ready to hear. What I love most about this book is, it’s easy to understand implement into your everyday life.

Since money is the single most powerful tool we have for navigating this complex world we’ve created, understanding it is critical. Here’s an important truth: Complex investments exist only to profit those who create and sell them. Not only are they more costly to the investor, but they’re also less effective. Learn about it and so much more in The Simple Path To Wealth.

Millionaire Teacher: The Nine Rules of Wealth You Should Have Learned in School [by Andrew Hallam]

Andrew Hallam became a debt-free millionaire by following a few simple rules. Listen, I’m not certain about you but I aspire to be debt free that’s why I decided to invest in this book.

A Millionaire Teacher shows you how to achieve financial independence through smart investing — without being a financial wizard. Author Andrew Hallam was a high school English teacher.

Since financial literacy is rarely taught in schools, do feel like you were shortchanged by your education system? This book is your solution, teaching you the ABCs of finance to help you build wealth.

In this book, he teaches you the financial fundamentals you need to follow in his tracks. You can spend just an hour per year on your investments, never think about the stock market’s direction — and still beat most professional investors.

The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns [by John C. Bogle]

I listen to a lot of money podcast and they’re always talking about investing in index funds. I haven’t started as of yet but after diving into this book I’m sure I will.

John C. Bogle reveals the keys to getting more out of investing such as low-cost index funds and informs us that a portfolio focused on index funds is the only investment that effectively guarantees your fair share of stock market returns.

Bogle describes the simplest and most effective investment strategy for building wealth over the long term: buy and hold, at very low cost, a mutual fund that tracks a broad stock market Index such as the S&P 500. I’m excited about this book!!!

The Value of Simple: A Practical Guide to Taking the Complexity Out of Investing [by John Robertson]

This book is mainly geared to my Canadian readers but I prefer to share the knowledge with everyone. The Value of Simple is a plain-language how-to guide to investing for Canadians by John Robertson. Canada has the highest investment fees in the world, as well as a confusing tax system that features four-letter words like RRSP and TFSA. Fortunately, there are low-cost index funds that make it easy and rewarding for you to become a do-it-yourself “couch potato” investor.

Control what can be controlled; minimize fees and effort. Investing doesn’t have to be complex to be successful. Keep it simple and you will succeed. With a focus on developing good processes to minimize the room for human error and step-by-step instructions, the book will walk you through the elements of managing your finances for the long term.

Therefore PMH Canadian readers, you have no excuse as to why you’re not investing. There’s an entire how-to guide dedicated to helping you to invest.
