Making Steps To Become An Everyday Millionaire

On today, I took advice from the book “Everyday Millionaires” and decided to increase the percentage I’m allotting to my 401k and ROTH plan. The company I work for matches up to 3.5% so I decided to invest 10% total to my retirement for a total contribution of 13.5% I figured that now is the perfect time to increase my contributions due to me not having any children at the moment, my expenses are low (I paid off my car in 2007) and I am not married. Also, along with contributing, when I first started investing into my 401k last year, I didn’t contribute to my ROTH at all but it was one of my goals for 2019 so I decided to start now because the best time to start investing into your future is yesterday.

If you haven’t already, check out the “7 Books That Has Helped Shape My Mindset.”

My Self-Care Checklist

I am the type of person who’s really good at checking herself, first! I can tap into my inner self and almost instantly figure out the root to my current issue. Sometimes, I’m over thinking and I’m in my own head a little too much and putting too much emphasis on something that’s not that big of a deal. When that happens, I have to check myself and my thoughts in order to be sure I’m processing things clearly before overreacting. Doing this has really helped me to maintain a positive mental state but it has helped me with being able to show up for my clients being as though my career is as Mental Health Professional.

Keeping a self-care checklist mentally stored for times when I’m in my head too much is very important to me. I think about what would make me feel better and have I done any of the things on the checklist that helps me to feel better. If I haven’t, I schedule it into my day to do so because knowing what’s the issue is half the battle, the other part is doing something about it.

Look within the mirror at yourself first. Work on you and everything on the outside will work in your favor once you start doing the inner work.

Workout- I feel amazing after a workout it makes me less fatigue and it’s something I’ve done for myself to not only look my best but to ensure that I am feeling my best as well.

Yoga- I started hot yoga a month ago and it’s been one of the best things I’ve done for myself. It helps me not only to maintain balance but to ensure that I am meeting the health benefits as well. Read here about the 7 Healthy Benefits Of Yoga.

Reading- Reading something new to me is like taking a mental vacation to a place I’ve never traveled to. I love enriching my mind with articles and books that are informative. Read here about the books that have helped shape my mindset.

Writing- I always love writing. When I was a little girl I use to keep a diary now as a woman, I keep a prayer journal and a gratitude journal. Writing helps me to release everything that’s in my head onto paper. For me, it’s sort of like cleaning out my closet. I lay everything out in two different piles, a keep pile and a get rid of pile. I compare writing to cleaning out your closet because of the organization. Write out the thoughts that are in your head, see it all laying there on paper then you keep the things that you’d like to “wear” (thoughts) that makes you feel good about yourself. I write out my thoughts and when I look at it all on paper, I can see exactly the thoughts I want to keep in my head, thoughts that are positive and I see the pile of thoughts I want to give away…sort of like the pile of clothes that no longer serve me and the woman I am becoming.

Take time away from social media- I spoke about the benefits and why I tend to go on a digital detoxing here and here. I go through a time when I really want to shake and move without updating my followers on all my moves. I love everyone who follows me and I appreciate each and every last one of you but it’s not about you all, this is strictly about me and I can’t show up for anyone if I’m not showing up for myself first. I believe one of the reasons why people follow me is for inspiration but if I feel as if I’m pouring from an empty cup and not really producing the results it looks as if I am on social media, then I’m not being true to myself and that’s one of the worst things you can do is lie to yourself.

Take time for myself- Sort of like digital detoxing, I take lots of time for myself. Because of how my life is currently, without kids and not married, I tend to really focus on my me time. I enjoy my own company… it’s lovely over here!

Met/talked with a friend- I love meeting with up with my girls just to catch up. It’s always good to pull away from work, the computer and the phone just have an intimate conversation over coffee or lunch.

Complimented someone- I love giving people genuine compliments. The last time I complimented a lady she started crying telling me that she needed to hear that and she also gave me a big hug. I invited her to sit down and talk with me about the things that were on her mind, she did and now we are like Soul Sisters. This happened on a random Wednesday while I was sitting down working in Starbucks. You never know what a person may be going through. Share a smile and a genuine compliment.

Drink at least 2 liters of water- I once wasn’t a water person at all but as I’ve gotten older, there’s no way I can’t be. There are so many health benefits to drinking water, believe me, your skin will thank you!

Do something fun- There are many facets of fun to me from traveling to doing something simple like going to Barnes and Noble’s and reading a business, tech or fashion magazine. Basically, learning is fun for me.

My Favorite Scriptures To Meditate On During Intimate Time With God

When I lived in Los Angeles, I became closer to God. Our relationship grew because I spent a lot of intimate time with him. I would write in my prayer journal, meditate, attend church and I was consistent with putting blessings in my blessing jar. I was able to hear his voice clearly and didn’t make a move without consulting with him in prayer. However, I am a constant work in progress and I’m constantly trying my best to be better. I still do all of those things and recently I started back setting an alarm on my phone to spend intimate time with him so for one hour I cannot be disrupted with anything that doesn’t involve me and God’s intimate time.

Another thing that I did while living in L.A. I had scriptures on my wall next to my bed and just about every morning, I would wake up, roll over and read them. These were the scriptures I had on my wall. Hopefully, they help you with your walk with God as well.

Matt 25:33

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Galatians 6:7-9

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption but he who sows to the spirit will of the spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Psalm 46:5

“God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”

Proverbs 16:3

“Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed.”

Psalm 37:4

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

John 14:12-14

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has Faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Psalm 112:3

“Wealth and Riches are in his house and his righteousness endures forever.”

Luke 2:52

“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men.”

II Chronicles 10:4

“Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”

Romans 8:28

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Jeremiah 29:11-14

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.”

How Focusing On Gratitude Can Help With Anxiety

Focusing on gratitude can really help you with Anxiety. As a Mental Health Professional, I tend to start off most sessions by asking the client to speak with me about the positive things that have happened within their week. I do this for several reasons but mainly so I can get them to focus on the positive things rather than putting so much energy on things that are negative and things they can’t control. Stopping to reflect and thinking about positive things allows you to be grateful within that moment. When we’re telling someone about our day, and we start off with the things that are negative, we’re not allowing ourselves the space in our minds to focus on anything that’s positive.

Before speaking with my clients about their mindset and gratitude, I typically do a few things within myself to test it out to see if it works for me as well. As many of you may know, I keep a prayer journal but in addition to that journal, I also have a gratitude journal. Just about every morning or sometime throughout my day, I take time to write in my gratitude journal. Listing things that I am grateful for helps me to stay in the flow of gratitude and it also helps with managing anxious thoughts.

Journaling on the beach in Los Angeles, California.

“Our anxiety doesn’t come from thinking about the future but wanting to control it” -Khalil Gibran

Think about it, we tend to want things to go a certain way and that’s normal because we are human but when we put so much pressure on ourselves is when we begin to develop anxious thoughts. Depending on how deeply we imagine the scenario we have conjured up in our minds is when we start to experience severe anxiety.

Let’s all learn to be grateful for moments whether big or small, for time spent doing what you enjoy and for the ability to create moments with those who you love. We may not have it all but I’m sure you and I can take a look at our lives and see at least 3 things that we are grateful for that we probably didn’t have 6 months ago. You have to give yourself grace. You have to give yourself time to grow. Learn to be gentle with yourself because you’re doing the very best that you can.

7 Books That Has Helped Shape My Mindset

When I finish reading a book, I feel as if I’ve just accomplished something major. I invested in my knowledge and became wiser so that’s major for me!! I am a big reader always have been and nowadays, it’s so much easier for me to finish a book because I have an Audible subscription via Amazon. I tend to listen while I’m working out, driving in my car, while I’m cooking breakfast or just doing everyday things around the house. I am always listening to something that will help me to grow in life and business. However, with social media being one of the main places where we receive our information, I am proud to say that I am old school and still love to read a good book (pen and highlighter please). Although I do have an audible account, some of the books listed below I’ve purchased the physical copy just to add to my home library. Here are some really great books that I’ve completed in the past few months.

Below you’ll find a few different genres. I am usually listening to and/or reading more than one book at a time. To purchase just click on the title or the image and add them to your book collection!

Becoming by Michelle Obama

This was my inflight read. I started this book during my birthday trip to Bali and just finished it during my last trip to L.A. This was a really great book. I loved learning about what it took to become Michelle Obama she spoke about her earlier childhood, her family and the years spent at Princeton and Harvard. She also gave the inside scoop on how it was growing up on the Southside of Chicago and how in many ways how she and Barack are just like us, everyday hard working Americans. She spoke about their marriage, IVF, marriage counseling and sooooo much more. This is definitely a book you should invest in reading.

Everyday Millionaires by Chris Hogan

I finished this book so quickly because it was just that good! It’s more of an interview style where the author speaks with different millionaires and he tells their stories. 79% of Everyday Millionaires became millionaires by investing in their companies retirement plan. I plan to listen to this book again within the next few months. I see it as being a book I’ll always go back to just to brush up on my knowledge and prepare myself to become an Everyday Millionaire.

Blend by Mashonda Tifrere

Mashonda hit the nail on the head with this book!! It was an excellent read from beginning to end. She gave tips on how she healed herself from her past relationship with Swizz Beats, she spoke about their very first child they had together who passed away, about her and Alicia Key’s relationship and how they were able to get to the point of being a blended family and so much more. I really enjoyed this book because of her transparency. She didn’t hold anything back which made the book even more interesting. It’s not a tell-all, it’s a self-help and she gives details that would have you wanting more with each page.

The Coming by Daniel Black

This book woke me up!!! The coming is basically about how we as African Americans were stolen from our homeland and the horrific events that happened on the boat while coming to America. The author gave explicit details about how life was in our homeland, how the “pale men” came in and stole us, what happened on the boat coming here and so much more. I took a great interest in this book because, how would you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you come from. Honestly, this book and other books like it inspires me to work harder. I owe it to my ancestors to be the best that I can be!!

Influencer by Brittany Hennessy

This is a great book if you’re interested in growing your following on Instagram/ social media. The author gives great tips from influencers and details on how they’ve managed to grow their followings. I finished this book a few months ago and I see myself reading it again.

Black Privilege by Charlamagne Tha God

Charlamagne Tha God speaks about his journey from a small town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina to now being a cohost of Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club. He spoke about in great detail how he turned his troubled early life around by owning his mistakes. What I loved most about this was the fact that he not only owned his mistakes but he also spoke about how his controversial opinions got him fired from several on-air jobs. Fast Forward to now and his bold advice and confidence is what he’s known for on The Breakfast Club. I love how he has the confidence to live his own truth.

The 10 top distinctions between Millionaire and Middle Class by Keith Cameron Smith

The author tells you how to think like a millionaire and reap the benefits of a millionaire mindset. He gives 10 key principles to moving beyond the middle class and up the economic ladder. One of them is millionaires think long-term and the middle class thinks short-term. He teaches about how to create a clear vision of the life you desire and to focus on it. This was a very inspirational and practical guide filled with savvy and sensible advice. I will be sure to read it again before the year is over to brush on everything that I learned and to ensure I am putting the knowledge to use.

How To Dress For Church

On Saturday nights, I find myself being very careful about which clothes I pick out for church the next day. I am very aware of the shape that I have so I intentionally pick out clothing that doesn’t draw too much attention to my figure. I am all for body positivity but I feel that there’s a time and place for everything and I just don’t believe that church is a place you should flaunt it all. (that’s just my opinion) But, if I’m being honest, I can’t say that every pencil skirt or pair of slacks that I pick out conceals my shape. That’s just hard to do. I’m a size 3-4 there’s no way I’d wear a size 6 skirt just to cover my shape in church, NO! I believe that’s unnecessary. I refuse to wear clothes that will swallow my petite figure, but what I will do is wear a blazer that comes down lower enough in the back, that way everything isn’t all out there screaming for unwanted attention.

A ruffled blouse and leather pencil skirt that comes below the knee. This style is perfect for church and work.

Within the last few weeks, these are the styles I wore to church. Even when I wear dresses, it comes to a certain length right above the knee or below but not ever too high. It’s all about respect. I know we’re living in a day in age where “if you got it flaunt it” but there’s a time and place for everything and church isn’t the place.

Blazer, lace crop top (which is actually see through but I’m wearing a black camisole underneath) and high waisted black slacks, black stockings and black pumps. Great outfit for church or a business meeting.

Now there’s nothing wrong with showing your stylish side but always do it with class. Everything should be done in moderation. If all you have to wear is bodycon dresses, then wear a longer blazer to take the attention off of your shape in the dress. The blazer should stop at least at by your hips. A blazer can help you with a lot of styles you may want to wear in church. Purchase one that’s universal that you can dress up or down and accessorize it differently each time with a brooch or pearls to give it a different look each time you wear decide to wear it.

Like I did with this blazer + bodycon dress. This is a great transitional outfit that can take you from church to brunch.

7 Healthy Benefits of Yoga

I’ve always wanted to start practicing yoga and this year I decided to invest in a month worth of hot yoga classes from Magnolia Yoga Studio here in New Orleans. So far, I’ve completed two classes without walking out, lol! The first class was 60 mins and the second was 90 mins. Honestly, the first class I felt as if I was going to fall out but I continued pushing myself to the end. I was very proud of myself for being able to focus and be my own cheerleader in my head. I kept telling myself, “You can do this P! Look around you, everyone’s pushing themselves to their maximum potential. Just keep going.” I pushed myself to do all of the poses and it felt great! I plan to do yoga at least 3 times a week along with going to the gym. Yoga is how I am practicing self-care this year. If you’re not familiar with my self–care regimen read more about it here.

Helps you to focus

An important component of yoga is focusing on the present. Studies have found that regular yoga practice improves coordination, reaction time, memory, and even IQ scores.

Joint Support

By gently taking joints ankles, knees, hips & shoulders through their range of motion, asana helps keep them strong, which researchers say may help keep you moving freely in athletic and everyday pursuits as you age.

Improves flexibility

Improved flexibility is one of the first and most obvious benefits of yoga. During your first class, you probably won’t be able to touch your toes, never mind do a backbend. But if you stick with it, you’ll notice a gradual loosening, and eventually, seemingly impossible poses will become possible. You’ll also probably notice that aches and pains start to disappear.

Increase blood flow

Yoga gets your blood flowing. More specifically, the relaxation exercises you learn in yoga can help your circulation, especially in your hands and feet. Yoga also gets more oxygen to your cells, which function better as a result. Twisting poses are thought to wring out venous blood from internal organs and allow oxygenated blood to flow in once the twist is released. Inverted poses, such as Headstand, Handstand, and Shoulderstand, encourage venous blood from the legs and pelvis to flow back to the heart, where it can be pumped to the lungs to be freshly oxygenated.

Improves your balance

Regularly practicing yoga increases proprioception (the ability to feel what your body is doing and where it is in space) and improves balance. People with bad posture or dysfunctional movement patterns usually have poor proprioception, which has been linked to knee problems and back pain.

Helps you to sleep deeper

Yoga can provide relief from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Restorative asana, yoga nidra (a form of guided relaxation), Savasana, pranayama, and meditation encourage pratyahara, a turning inward of the senses, which provides downtime for the nervous system.

Gives you peace of mind

Yoga slows down the mental loops of frustration, regret, anger, fear, and desire that can cause stress. And since stress is implicated in so many health problems from migraines and insomnia to lupus, MS, eczema, high blood pressure, and heart attacks if you learn to quiet your mind, you’ll be likely to live longer and healthier.

Embracing My Natural Hair

This year, I told myself I’ll start wearing my natural hair more. The real reason I haven’t been wearing it because of the amount of maintenance that goes into taking care of your natural hair especially when I’m wearing it in a fro. Between searching for the right product and twisting it every night or every other night, it became too much for me to the point where I decided that it was just much more convenient to wear my units. It’s been almost a week and I’m enjoying wearing it blown out. My cousin who’s one of my hairstylists washed it, flat ironed it and trimmed my ends. I have a good bit of hairstylists in my family so learning how to do my own hair was something I never really had to do because they always tried new styles on me. So for now, this is me embracing my natural hair and giving it time to breathe from units and braids.

So far so good!

Daycation. Staycation. Baecation.

Let’s talk about getting away for a few. Now when I speak about getting away, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go on this big elaborate vacation that requires you to be on a flight for 15 hours. Getting away can simply be a daycation. Nowadays, with everything going on in the world, it’s healthy to pull away for a few days and just go on a road trip, which brings me to speaking about a daycation.

While on Angie’s podcast, listen to it here. I spoke about me not ever experiencing a Daycation and maybe a week later after that episode was recorded, my lover and I took our first daycation together. We went on a road trip to Florida which was about 3 hours away from New Orleans. It was such a spur of the moment trip and we had a blast. While on the way there, we stopped to pick up wine to enjoy while on the beach. By the time we arrived, we were able to catch daylight and watch the sunset. It was very romantic and just to think that getaway cost us less than $100. So the next time you’re looking for something fun and exciting to do, gas up the car and take a road trip to the nearest state. Also, be sure to create a playlist to enjoy cute sing-alongs together.

I also had my first Staycation while my lover was in town. He rented a really cute Airbnb for us to enjoy 12 days of just us. It’s the closet we’ve ever been to living together, LOL. He found the location on his own and he did a really great job. We stayed in the lower 9TH ward area across the canal if you’re familiar with New Orleans. It was really close to the Chalmette area. We stayed in a double shotgun house and the owners were on the other side. It was a one bedroom and perfect for just us two. When you first walk in, you’d walk into the kitchen/living room area, the bedroom and lastly, the bathroom. Like all Airbnb’s the home came with kitchen appliances and utensils as well as basic seasons, etc.  We went grocery shopping because we knew some nights we would want to stay in and cook dinner together and since breakfast is my thing, I knew I would want to cook breakfast.  A staycation is exactly what it sounds like, staying in your own city and booking either a hotel or an Airbnb. It’s nice for a weekend getaway or to just add a little us time to your relationship.

Now we’re all pretty familiar with a Baecation but just in case you’re not, it’s simply going on a vacation with your Bae. In 2018, I posted a picture on my vision board of a baecation and before the year ended, my lover made sure this was something we did. You can see here about all the fun we had while in Bali. This was our first baecation together but we have more coming up in the future. I am so happy to have someone in my life who enjoys life and traveling just as much as I do. I really enjoy getting away and immersing myself into different cultures. I love to see how other people are living and if it’s something I can add it to my life. Traveling is something that makes my heart smile and I see myself doing more of it in my future. I’ll be sure to document and take you all along on my travel journeys whether it’s a Daycation, Staycation or a Baecation.
